At the end of class, I heard the same guy make fun of taekwondo and my taekwondo kicks. No idea why. My theory is that there are guys out there who come to MMA class for the excitement in life. In our academy, we don’t train like Olympic g force taekwondo facebook competitors. We do teach students how to punch. We even teach our students how to box and grapple as well. We also teach them practical self defense maneuvers, as opposed to rehearsed 3 step fighting patterns.

Keep your hands up in front of you. If you’re in a sparring or middle stance, this will put one hand – usually your weaker hand – closer to your opponent. This hand should always be kept up, ready to guard your face – but your back hand can be either parallel to your front hand or below it. If you put your back hand below your front hand, it will be in better position to guard your stomach, but you may lose some speed and power for your reverse punch. As with sparring stances, try it both ways and see what works better for you.

Begin taekwondo 4. form by breaking boards using simple and solid techniques. Students always learn to break with a side kick in my academy. A kick that strays from the center of the board will have the least likelihood of getting injured. The heel is durable and solid.

If you’re going to be able to overcome any of the techniques used on you, or execute the maneuvers to beat your opponent, having the strength advantage is a key. Working body to body training should be utilized whenever possible.
