The Belts Of Taekwondo

I leave it up to you to decide which style works best for you. Personal development, meditation and spirituality can be achieved with the help of taekwondo. With 20+ competitors, I knew very few could have trained as hard as I had.
Ranking systems in Taekwondo are as numerous and varied as the organisations that oversee it. Traditional belt structure is used as a guideline for organisations to decide whether or not they want to use more gups than the normal nine, or fewer. They use different coloured belts, and some use stripes to distinguish between ranks of the same colour. The term “Gup” or “Geup” means “degree”. According to the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) there are 10 Gups, working backwards from 10 to 1, starting with a white belt and ending with a red-black belt. The term “Dan” means, “Phase”. There are 9 Dans, starting with the first and ending with the ninth, all represented by a black belt.
In our academy, we don’t train like Olympic tae kwon do image competitors. We do teach students how to punch. We even teach our students how to box and grapple as well. We also teach them practical self defense maneuvers, as opposed to rehearsed 3 step fighting patterns.
Now you and I know one simple truth…there is no excuse for hard work. If you want to be able to defend yourself then you have taekwondo with boxing to work out and work out long and hard. Fortunately there is one other simple truth…working out is fun!
Keep your hands up in front of you. If you’re in a sparring or middle stance, this will put one hand – usually your weaker hand – closer to your opponent. This hand should always be kept up, ready to guard your face – but your back hand can be either parallel to your front hand or below it. If you put your back hand below your front hand, it will be in better position to guard your stomach, but you may lose some speed and power for your reverse punch. As with sparring stances, try it both ways and see what works better for you.
Begin taekwondo height by breaking boards using simple and solid techniques. Students always learn to break with a side kick in my academy. A kick that strays from the center of the board will have the least likelihood of getting injured. The heel is durable and solid.
The white belt symbolizes birth or the beginning for the stylist. Students who wear this belt are just on the start of there road of learning and picking up as much knowledge as they can about this fighting system so they can continue learning.
Kicking to the front of the thigh, just above the knee, causes a great deal of pain, as does kicking to the rear of the thigh. To be effective the attack must be delivered at an upward angle to the rear of the knee. This kick can cause temporary weakness in the leg making it hard to stand, much less run.
